Design Exploration Project - Vertical Evolution Cottages - Brunswick Habitat for Humanity

Our team at Moser Design Group wanted to share a bit more detail about a project that is currently in process - we are thrilled to be a part of this unique design challenge as it has allowed us to embody our community-forward and strategic design approach - while maintaining intention around historical context.

Where?

The Brunswick County, NC Habitat for Humanity

What?

The Brunswick County, NC Habitat for Humanity has been acquiring lots throughout the historic downtown. The lots range from 35’-80’ wide and the market warrants 2-4 bedroom cottages, so MDG was tasked with creating a design that met specific and intentional criteria.

Why?

Our design plans were formed to meet the following criteria:

•Retain a uniform building footprint for a consistent foundation plan

•Meet the Habitat International criteria for max square footage

•Incorporate accessible/visitable bedroom and bathroom

•Utilize similar framing packages and a minimal amount of window sizes

•Be able to address a narrow lot or a wide lot by being able to rotate and orient to the narrow or wide side.

•1 or more can attach as duplexes or townhouses

The Details:

We utilized a standard chassis that grows vertically, depending on the desired program. During the process, the client requested a 1-story, 2 bedroom version so the chassis was added onto the ground floor.

The 3-bedroom version also required two elevation options for greater variety. All of the designs accommodate porches both on the narrow and the wide side to address varying frontage widths, and on corners both porches could be built and even wrap around if desired.

Nine-foot 1st floor ceilings, and elevations of 24” above grade give these houses dignity and allow them to blend in with the historic context. Several of these cottages are currently under construction now. Show below are some of the design plans, curated for an awards submission.
